Jeff Turnbow is speaking at the North American Marketing Leadership Summit 2026 in Phoenix, Arizona, on a question that will become increasingly important as AI adoption accelerates:
If every company has access to the same AI tools, what actually creates competitive advantage?
Turnbow calls it The AI Paradox.
As access to increasingly capable AI models becomes widespread, simply having AI will not be a meaningful differentiator. Competitive advantage will come from what a company knows, how it thinks, the proprietary knowledge and signals it owns, the decisions its people make, and how effectively it turns AI into measurable business outcomes.
AI access is becoming universal
Most companies will eventually have access to many of the same foundation models, productivity tools, marketing platforms, automation systems, and AI agents. The technology layer will continue to improve, but access alone does not create a durable advantage.
Two companies can use the same model and get very different results because they bring different knowledge, processes, data, customer understanding, operating discipline, and human judgment to the system.
The real differentiators
The AI Paradox focuses on the assets that are much harder for competitors to copy: proprietary knowledge, institutional experience, first-party customer signals, trusted brand authority, documented processes, business rules, decision history, and experienced human judgment.
The strategic question for leadership is not only, Which AI tools should we use? It is also, What does our company know and do that makes those tools more valuable in our hands?
From tools to business outcomes
AI strategy becomes meaningful when it improves how the business operates. That can include faster decision-making, better customer experiences, stronger marketing signals, more relevant sales follow-up, reduced operational friction, improved knowledge access, and better use of institutional intelligence.
The objective is not AI adoption for its own sake. The objective is a stronger business.
